BELTON - After all their wins, all their home runs, all their records set, perhaps it'd only be fitting to erect statues for Dillon Newman and Shane Hoelscher at Tiger Field.
That's not likely to happen, but they're certainly deserving of such reverence. For now, they'll have to settle for statewide acclaim.

BELTON - Deciding to attend college close to family isn't an uncommon choice for high school graduates.
That's what Belton graduate John Nieberding's doing. However, his situation is anything but ordinary.

COLLEGE STATION - Belton quarterback David Ash enjoyed consecutive summers slinging the pigskin around to familiar targets. Each repetition produced better timing and chemistry that ultimately led to offensive prowess in the fall.
This year, though, the University of Texas verbal pledge must familiarize with some fresh blood. That's precisely what 7-on-7 football's for.

Can District 12-5A foes Belton and Copperas Cove challenge for the league championship and make deep playoff runs? How will Salado fare moving up to Class 3A and, conversely, how will Cameron Yoe fare dropping to 2A? Other teams such as Lampasas, Gatesville, Rogers and Milano have lofty expectations.
Belton senior Grace Weaver, the 2009 District 12-5A co-Most Valuable Player, racked up 432 kills last year but is known as a complete player for the Lady Tigers. She’s verbally committed to Tulane.

BELTON - The quote imprinted on the back of their warm-up shirts reads "Don't be afraid to give up the good for the great."
In layman's terms, don't settle for mediocrity.
That phrase epitomizes the transformation the Belton Lady Tigers' mindset encountered during the past year.

BELTON - Retention? Check. Conditioning? Check.
Did the Belton Tiger football players even take a summer vacation?
If they did, it wasn't much according to Rodney Southern. The fourth-year coach gave his players an excellent grade Monday during the opening day of practices, particularly regarding their overall fitness that continues to signify the program's evolution.

The Belton Tigers can attest.
After battling No. 2-ranked Abilene tooth-and-nail Friday night before losing 36-27 in the Dave Campbell Kickoff Classic, the Tigers weren't celebrating any moral victories.
