The Belton Tiger Swimming Team traveled north last weekend to compete in the Mansfield Swim Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers finished fifth and the Lady Tigers were 15th among the 24 teams entered in the meet.

HARKER HEIGHTS - This wasn't exactly the follow-up the Belton Tigers had in mind.
After coming back to edge Temple in the District 12-5A opener on Saturday, the Tigers came back to earth on Tuesday night, falling to the Harker Heights Knights 63-51.

The Belton High School swimmers ended 2009 on a positive note --- The Tigers had a strong showing at the Belton End of Year Invitational, setting two school records and recording 34 individual-best times. Nine teams, including district rivals and standout area squads, participated in the meet last Saturday.

BELTON - There are certain waters no basketball team cares to test. One of those would be trying to win in spite of being shut out for an entire quarter.
After a solid first half that saw the Belton Tigers grab a nine-point halftime lead, they went scoreless in the third quarter and watched the lead disappear. They didn't get it back.

THE WOODLANDS - The Belton Lady Tigers beat their second ranked team in as many days, this time taking down No. 2-ranked The Woodlands 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in The Kilt Cup.
It was the Lady Tigers' first win over The Woodlands, which was also ranked No. 6 in ESPN RISE's national poll.

THE WOODLANDS - The Belton Tigers rebounded from their first loss of the season and beat Houston Mayde Creek 4-1 on Saturday afternoon to conclude play in The Kilt Cup.
Belton scored first in the 11th minute on junior Tyler Pate's goal off an assist by freshman Angel Hernandez. The Tigers regained the lead in the second half when junior Garret Patterson scored off an assist by junior Tayron Martin in the 53rd minute.

BELTON - Defending against College Station A&M Consolidated this season has been a case of ganging up on the No. 14-ranked recruit in the nation and tempting the perimeter players to beat you from the outside.

WACO - Belton's Rodney Southern has been named head coach for the Red team in the second annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes Super Centex Victory Bowl to be played June 12 at Baylor's Floyd Casey Stadium.
In 2009, third-year coach Southern led the Tigers to a 10-2 record - they had 10 total wins from 2004-08 - and the Class 5A Division II playoffs, Belton's first playoff appearance since 2003.

BELTON - On Jan. 22, 2007, Rodney Southern assumed the duties of rebuilding Belton's once-proud football program.
Three years later, the Tigers' future appears very bright.
After going 10-2 last season and winning its first playoff game since 2000, Belton celebrated its rapid rebirth by honoring its players and coaching staffs at the Tigers football banquet Thursday night at Bell County Expo Center.

The Temple and Belton swimming teams left Saturday's Wildcat Winter Classic with some much-needed answers and a few loose ends to tie up, as well. But all in all, it was a solid way to head into the District 12-5A meet in two weeks.
The Tigers got second-place finishes from senior Jason Ellis and junior Kyle Burt. Ellis was the runner-up in the 500 freestyle and Burt was second in the 100 butterfly. Also for Belton's boys, Austin Couillard was third in the 200 individual medley. Sophomore Clara Pappenfort had the Lady Tigers' best result, placing third in the 50 free.

GEORGETOWN - The Belton Lady Tigers picked up their first win at the Governor's Cup on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Dripping Springs.
Belton (7-4-1) lost to Austin Bowie 3-2 on Thursday and fell 2-0 to The Woodlands on Saturday. No other information was reported.
The Lady Tigers open District 12-5A play Friday at Marker Heights.

COLLEGE STATION - The Belton boys swimming and diving team proved early on it had district championship potential.
Now that the Tigers' chance at the crown is finally here - preliminaries of the District 12-5A Meet begin at 6:30 tonight at Texas A&M's Student Recreation Center Natatorium - they're still as confident as ever that the title is within reach.

It was a sold and productive final tune-up for the Belton Tiger Swimming and Diving Team at last Saturday’s Annual Wildcat Winter Classic Meet in Temple. Strong individual and relay performances helped the Tigers finish second and the Lady Tigers third in front of a fan-packed Hardin Swim Center.

BELTON - All Belton coach John Osborn was looking for was a full-bore 32 minutes of effort. His team did him 4 minutes better Friday night.
Belton stayed afloat for a shot at a playoff berth by wrestling a 68-66 overtime victory from Harker Heights at Tiger Gym.
After leading for 3 1/2 quarters, the Tigers scrambled back from four points down in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime. The Tigers took control of the 4-minute overtime early and fended off attacks from the Knights.

WACO - Temple's McKenzie Ralston finished in a tie for sixth and Belton's Jordan Sniggs and Courtney Cryer tied for 12th on Wednesday at the Midway Invitational at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.

BRYAN - After Belton's Eric Braeuer hit a 3-pointer near the end of regulation, the Belton Tigers couldn't catch a break in overtime and fell to the Bryan Vikings 77-70 Tuesday night.
The Vikings (25-7, 9-3 District 12-5A) shot 20 free throws in the extra frame, compared to only three for the Tigers (15-14, 3-9).

MANSFIELD - Belton's Kyle Burt and Jason Ellis recorded wins at Saturday's Class 5A Region III Meet at Mansfield ISD Natatorium and became the first Tigers to advance to the state swimming and diving meet since the program was restarted nine years ago.
Burt won the 100-yard freestyle and Ellis claimed gold in the 100 backstroke to earn the automatic berth to the state meet on Feb. 26-27 in Austin.

It was a banner week for the nationally ranked Lady Tigers soccer team with a dominating performance at The Woodlands tournament. This year’s Lady Tigers team is simply a mixture of gutty sophomores, future stars that are freshmen and veteran juniors and seniors.

BELTON - It took a last-minute goal and a remarkable debut of an unheralded but not unheard-of goalkeeper to decide this one.
So pretty much, it was the type of heart-stopping battle that is typical of the Bell County boys soccer rivalry.

KILLEEN - The Belton Tigers ended a disappointing season with a tough 69-57 loss at Killeen Ellison on Tuesday, despite leading after three quarters.
"I've said all along this is one of the most competitive districts around," Belton coach John Osborn said. "Every night the team that is able to finish is going to win, and we weren't able to finish tonight."
Sean Voss led the Tigers (16-15, 4-10 District 12-5A) with 16 points. Devonte Brown had the same amount for the playoff-bound Eagles (21-11, 9-5).

GEORGETOWN - The Belton Lady Tigers smacked 31 hits and scored 18 runs to win two games to open the Georgetown Tournament. Belton pounded Brentwood Christian Academy 12-0 in four innings then beat Lorena 6-2 on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Tigers had eight extra-base hits in the opener, including home runs by Victoria Alcozer and Amber Peters. Alcozer went 3-for-4 and Peters was 2-for-3 with four RBI.

Belton hitters Shane Hoelscher (left), Seth Alcozer, John Nieberding and Kevin Thornton look to lead the Tigers on a deep postseason run. Belton finished 23-9 last season.

Tyler Vail's fingers, which turned dry because of the frigidness, were struggling to maintain control of the baseball. Fortunately for Belton, he found enough grip to get the Tigers' season off on the right foot.

LEANDER - The Belton baseball team bounced back from its first loss of the season against Leander with a dominating with over Class 4A No. 1 Brenham.
The Tigers managed four hits in a 5-3 loss to Leander but exploded for 14 hits and got a strong effort by senior Dillon Newman in a 9-3 win over Brenham on the first day of the Rock Hardball Classic on Thursday.

ROUND ROCK - The Belton baseball team wrapped up play in the Rock Hardball Classic with a dominant pitching performance by sophomore Blayton Magana in a 6-0 win over Midland on Saturday morning at Dell Diamond.
Magana struck out four and allowed three hits in six innings to earn his first varsity win.

COPPERAS COVE - Belton's Regan Tindell won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, teammate Courtney Pate was first in the pole vault and Temple's Loryn Goodwin claimed gold in the 300 hurdles to highlight Saturday's Copperas Cove meet.
The Lady Tigers were third at the eight-team meet and the Tem-Cats finished fifth. The Tigers were third and the Wildcats took sixth.
Other top finishers for Belton's girls were Katelin Huckabee and Lauren Hildinger, who placed second and third, respectively, in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Once a Tiger, Always a Tiger --- A private verbal commitment made before Christmas was officially made public last Friday when Belton senior cross country and track record-holder Regan Tindell signed a national letter of intent to run for the Division I University of Missouri Tigers next fall. The announcement came before a roomful of classmates, teammates, coaches and family members at the athletic fieldhouse.

Big Charleston Lewis responded to the call Feb 3rd, 2010 at the Belton High School athletic field house. The son of Charlie and Ronda Lewis, selected All-District 12-5A in both football and academics, signed a letter of intent to attend and play football at West Texas A&M next fall. The senior defensive lineman played a large part in the success of the District 12-5A champion Tiger football team and is looking forward to doing the same for the NCAA Division II Buffaloes.

Belton won their 18th straight district game with a dominating 7-0 win over Killeen Shoemaker. Belton got up early with a 1-0 lead and never looked back. Dillion Darr added a shot on goal at 34:32. Logan Hellinghausen had a stop on defense at 29:43. Carlo Mosnia hit the post at 25:21. Hellinghausen with a perfectly struck crossing pass set up Tim Hagen who’s shot was wide at 24:36. At Belton High School, the "big-man-on-campus" stands about 5’10" tall --- but in the eyes of the Texas Sports Writers Association, he stands much, much taller.
District 12-5A Football’s unanimous choice for Most Valuable Defensive Player of the Year, senior Zac Sakaria, has been selected to the TSWA’s Class 5A All-State squad. He is the ONLY player from the district to be named to the 1st team, although four of his teammates on the Bi-District championship Tiger football team were also picked for all-state distinction..

The Lady Tigers out shot Killeen Ellison 23-6 with most of Killeen’s shot on goals coming late with Belton mixing up their lineup. Ellison playing a defensive game held on strong for most of the first half with the Lady Tigers on scoring until midway through the first half. In the end it was simply too much talent on Belton’s side and the Lady Tigers won their 34th straight district game and 62-1-4 since 2005.

Tiger Head Track Coach Mark Erwin is a happy man --- He has 17 of the 27 athletes who lettered last year returning to the track this season. What a nucleus to begin the competition. Their goals include district championships for the freshmen and junior varsity and at least a top-3 finish for the varsity.

Belton’s Lady Tiger Powerlifting team traveled to Taylor last Saturday and brought home a third place trophy.
The ladies earned one first, two second and a third place finish as a team.
Individually, Candace Stiles placed second in the 123 lb class. Kaitlyn St. Clair was third in her 132 lb class. Sierra Walker out-muscled her competition to take first place in the 148 lb. class. Leticia Alvarado finished second in the 165 lb. class.

In the opening game, Belton pounded Marble Falls 49-21 behind 17 points from Thomas Shelburne and 15 from Brandon Rhoads. Matthew Chapman added eight, Andrew Beckendorf, four, Jesus Gonzales got three points and Collin Hallgarth had two.

The Belton Tigers strong-armed their way to the championship at last Saturday’s powerlifting meet in Lake Belton Gym. The boys team posted a total score of 51 points, seven ahead of Waco Midway and more than doubling the total points scored by each of the other schools, Copperas Cove, Waco and Temple.
The Lady Tigers also gave a strong showing at the meet, garnering three 1st place finishes, a pair of 2nd places and one 5th place to take third overall in the girls division. They finished three points behind the winner, Waco Midway, and only two points behind second-place Copperas Cove.

The weather was cold in Round Rock Monday evening but junior pitcher Tyler Vail, District 12-5A’s Newcomer of the Year last season, was hot on the mound. He entered the game for the final four innings, relieving starter Justin Rhea, and turned in a brilliant performance.

The BHS Tigers #1 golf team competed in the 19-team field of schools at the 2010 5A Boys Marvin Dameron Invitational at Midway last Saturday. Klein Oak won the championship in a tie-breaker playoff against Vista Ridge at the Twin Rivers course.
“We played pretty well the first day, but not so well on Saturday," head coach Jimmy Hellums commented. "Looks like we still have some things to get fixed before district."

For Belton it was back-to-back overtime games that might have done them in with a tie that seemed like a loss for a program that has only lost one game in the past 70. The two toughest district games are back-to-back against Temple and Consolidated. When nobody can even tie you for year’s that is how far the program has come in the past decade.`
